In 1992 Maserati of Modena, Italy manufactured 16 purpose built Challenge series race cars to compete against each other in Europe as a factory sponsored promotion. They were of all-composite, monocoque construction; extremly lightweight, (about 1624 pounds) competition-only bruisers. They sported a twin turbo, 2.0 litre V-6 326 bhp Maserati power plant. They had 18 inch wheels, massive Brembo brakes, independent link suspension and 6 speed Getrag gearbox. Because of the power-to-weight ratio, acceleration is described as "frightening." Maximum rated speed was over 170 mph. The car shown here is one of only nine that remain (seven were wrecked in competition) and is the only car in North America. This particular car was owned by John Neilson, famed Danish driver and winner of Sebring and LeMans. It was purchased in March 1997 from Christian Pedersen of Denmark, an indirect associate of Mr. Neilson.
